I read that there are 6 convents in Egypt recognized by the Holy Synod, and all but one is in cities. So if anyone could tell me all 6 and their locations and which one is not in a city, but in the desert...

Thanks so much.... please help me

Pray for me

God Bless you for your caring help...

im not sure, but i reallly think that st ammonious monastery, the monastery of the martyrs, in esna should be recognized... a nun there told me that the pope loves this convent and said whoever goes there is like they "kedeso" because of the blood of the martyrs there... that convent is in the desert somewhere...also st demianas convent is also in the desert... but sad to say the actually town is not too far, about a 2 min drive from the door of the convent

in Old Cairo there is I believe 4 convents
Abu Sefein
Amir Tadros in Haret el Room
Mari Gergiuis in Haret el Zewela
and I think one for Virgin Mary's

Abu Sefein's has another "branch" in alexandria
And St Demiana's convent in Domiat

when i was in lebanon , i slept in a convent by myself , ( the only visitor in the convent ) and ate , and learned how to sew socks with nuns . u know , for some reason , i know what others finally express to me ... when u go to a monastary or a convent ... u have such an urge to work , and help out ..... not becuase u want pride and recognition , but becuase u genuinly want to .
oh how wonderful it would be to be a servant in the house of the lord !!!

anyways , to sleep in a convent was one unique experience . it changed my life . i tried my hardest to get into spiritual mode , but it was very difficult , so i just read my agpeya . i was very blessed , and so well treated by the nuns ... they are so holy .. and let me tell u something ... whenever my aunt ( one of the nuns in the convent i visted ) tells me she and her sister nuns will pray for me .... let me tell u .. THEIR PRAYERS WORK .... ALL THE WAY .. there are 2 specific examples where i asked them to pray for me .. and it worked to perfection .

i love my aunt . and i love lebanon .

wow...that sounds so cool tony! at first i was like, why are they letting a guy stay overnight in a convent...they wouldnt let me... until you said it was your aunt...

wow...that sounds awesome...but thats in Lebanon right? Just curious, is it a Coptic Orthodox Convent?

So are all these postive...like where are they exactly..like where is Haret Zewela?
And are these real..some i only hear about and i ask people in egpyt about it and they dont know what im talking about...

also, which one did you personally like best? What did you like about it? If you were a girl (if you're not already), which one would you go to?

I went to like 3 of the above mentioned ones...I wen to Mari Gergis and both for St. Abu Seifin... the one i liked best is St. Abu seifin in Old Cairo because they don't let just anyone in... which makes it mmore peaceful...but like, i dont like the way they are in the midst of the city... like i like how the monasteries are isolated and stuff and you really feel like you left the world, not just moved to a different location...does anyone know if St. Demiana's convent have that feeling, anyone who has been there...

Also answer the same above feeling questions... your favorite monastery and what you like most about it, etc..

And any more touching relevant stories are welcome!

haret zuela is near haret el room lool... they are both in the city in cairo, not isolated at alll... st demianas monastery is pretty isolated, not so far from the city but isolated... i think st demianas would have that feeling... it was pretty quiet when i went... but in every convent you will see people coming to visit on weekends.

also, st ammonious' monastery, deir el shohada is like that and that deir is in esna, upper egypt...

also deir el anba bedaba in nag hammadi was pretty quite and kind of isolated... they built a very smalllll town around the monastery and are building a mosque right in front of the convent as we speak... real grimmy lol i cant think of any more isolated ones right now...

+Iryny nem `hmot,

I think Saint Demiana's is considered the most isolated, as Shaq mentioned. It's not built right into the city, and you're not aware of the towns around you. There are none, though, to my knowledge that are out in the open wilderness like the ancient monasteries.

There's a group that used to go very regularly from California, HopelessCase, you might want to get in contact with them if you're interested in visiting. The group of girls spent a week or two at the monastery and all came back very affected.
If you're interested, I can get "Faith" to hook you up.

Please pray for me.

Shaq:
Anba Ammonious Monastery is for women right? Second of all by "esna" do you mean ansenna?

Just Curious the two you mentioned, why haven't they been recognized by the Holy Synod?

Ya, I was kind of thinking, like of an Abu Magar equivalent convent... that was the quietest deir i went to... I like St. Anthony's in that you have to drive like at least 10 minutes in the desert to get there ... i wish there was something like that for women...that would be awesome... maybe one day they could build one... of course it wouldn't have the history...but hey...you can't have it all...

Fortunatas: which convent did they stay in because i asked and they said it wasn't possible... I mean with struggling some monasteries accept women visitors overnight but convents....i heard no...

Hmm, I couldn't get to St. Demiana's...I will have to go see...I want to see what it's like...

I was just amazed by beauty at like, St.Anthony's monastery, but didn't get the same feeling at any of the 3 convents i went to...

Maybe they will build new ones soon... who knows.. maybe one in America.. that would be awesome...

Keep going on this thread guys...

feel free to share your opinons on the questions in my earlier post...like about your favorite deirs and what you like about them...

This is really cool to talk about...

+Iryny nem `hmot,

They stayed at Saint Demiana's convent. Smile They attended Midnight Praises with the nuns and had a full retreat there.

I have a strong bias toward Saint Antony's, and warn you that it's not likely you'll find a monastery so beautiful and so full anywhere. It was, after all, the first monastery in the world...founded by the bestest Saint there is... Smile

Please pray for me.

Like I liked Abu Magar in that its quietest..but St.Anthony.....i wish someone could take me there and forget me there....

Yea, I guess you could never find another deir like that... but I think the Wilderness setting does a lot... and is very Biblical... \\

But like... I don't like hekayat el adura foust el medina....

like i dont like when they are in cities...

St. Demiana;s///thats so cool... maybe i will try that... and that makes more sense being that it is kind of far...

yes the convents for women... i dunno i think esna and ansinna might be the same place... im not very sure, i was confused of that while i was in egypt as well but was so busy i never asked really... in any case, if they are different, they dont seem far apart...and this monastery is pretty isolated

well anba ammounios convent i guess should have been recognized, the pope visited it and is said to have reallly loved it because of its history...

it seems that it has been newly inhabitated, maybe within the past century... i am just guessing here... maybe thats why... but also, maybe the list u r looking as in outdated since HH is reviving many many monasteries as we speak...

anba bidaba actually looks very, very established... they built around the ancient convent... and they make the besttt tonias there lol

I don't think ansena and esna are the same

Esna is between aswan and Luxor

whereas Ansena is a little more in the north

It's in el gabal el muqattam I think.
It's on a street called "Shara3 ter3et el gabal, motafarri2 bein masr wil sudan."

Don't ask haha, I just remember going there last year and it having a super long name.
I don't know why I remembered all that haha.
Hope that helps!
