Hey guys,
I have a tough time with pride, due to my weakness. But how can we fight it? What are ways to keep ourselves from taking up pride?

Its not, Tony. Please believe me...

Please forgive me if you feel that this is directed to you, which it is certainly not.

I have to have the most pride ever, it is a REAL tough thing...but also there are many different types of pride. So Micheal, do you think you can tell us a little more about the pride you struggle with. (without saying the exact thing). Very Happy

Laughing Ok, George! Smile

Basically, I mean in general. There's a huge variety, too many to mention. I suffer from all of it! I get it a lot while dressed as a deacon and I get it all the time when having a normal conversation.

Micheal,

I think that I can kind of relate....When it comes to being a deacon, then I can give a real good word of advice that my father of confession gave me. He said, "before you learn a hymn, ask yourself, am I doing it for the people or God?"

Than statement either really helped you or made me look very foolish. Very Happy

Well, what do you have to be so proud of? Didn't everything that you have God gave you? If you think about it, you got nothing you have now. God gave it all to you. If you claim "I bought so-and-so", well, my friend, God allwed you to buy it.

Hope this helps a lil,
matt

Read the first 4 chapters of unseen warfare on submission (good stuff), repentance is a call to move from making ego the centre of our life to God. If we submit our will to God He will grant us humility, its an unusual virtue because it can't be obtained by effort...

Thats a start and from there pride can be overcome.

God bless,

CS

Yes, these are all fine suggestions. Or you can let me berate you until you cry. This would help.

LOL! That can work.

One way I know is to always put your sins and downfalls in front of you. That way, you would have nothing to be proud of. Just make sure this doesn't get rid of your self-esteem either, or you're in big doo-doo.

God bless,
Matt

You can also read the chaper about "Blessed are the poor in spirit" in pope shenouda's book called "Contemplations on the Sermon on the Mount"

You can find it here: http://www.coptnet.com/Pope.htm

Greetings all,

We had a lesson several weeks ago about "Pride as an Obstacle to Repentance" based on the readings of week 3 of the Great Lent (Isaiah 8-13). Perhaps it will be of some benefit. Many of the ideas are summarized from "Ascending the Heights" (mentioned above) and, in turn, the Ladder of Divine Ascent by Saint John Climacus.

You can download it here:

Wishing you all a joyous Holy Fifty Days. God Bless,

anthony
