what do yall think of having a book club? we can all read a couple books and get together like once a week or a couple days of the month and talk about the books, what we benefitted from them and we can all share! it'd be swell, indeed, and i already know two people that are willing to do that [me and kookoo] and i know we have other book-readers in Church... they'll be Christian books, of course... and maybe here and there we can have weird books [like davinci code] and point out the wrong things in the book to rebut it... let us know what you think and we can get it organised!! =)

I really like this idea a lot! I'd say let's start with one of Baba Shenouda's books, or even a short article, just to get this going. If no one has any other suggestions, I can look and post a file in this thread and we can take it from there.

From marysoliman:true beans bro i'm all for it. good suggestion. we miss you here in the land of the beautiful sun.

i would love to do this..but i mean which day? everyday is so packed with stuff at church. we have alhan, prayer meeting, youth meeting, etc. which day were you all thinking of doing this?

i defin. think mark made a good suggestion about reading the Pope's books. or maybe we can even read parts from the Church Father's books and discuss them, or incorporate it into prayer meeting. its all up to you guys. just let me know what you all think

please remember me in your prayers Smile

Here we go. Let's start with the book "Release of the Spirit," by H.H. Pope Shenouda. Here's the link (http://tasbeha.org/content/hh_books/relspirt/index.html); we have copies in the church bookstore, if you prefer, but we can begin with this book.

Pray for me.

I think this is the best book to start with! Smile HHPS's words are so edifying and powerful. I think everyone will benefit very much from reading this--we should all use it as a tool to evaluate ourselves, especially in our service.

Please remember me in your prayers.

Let's set a tentative first date for meeting, next Thursday, March 3, 2005. If this date's not very good because of Spring Break, holla back.

We can meet in my sha'a. I'll send details when it gets closer, as well as changes if there are too many conflicts.

Just thought of something... Why don't we meet online? We can simply create a thread, or an entire forum, dedicated to the "Book Club." Post your thoughts on where you'd like to do it, online or at someone's house or a coffee shop, lake Ella, etc.

I think Lake Ella would be a perfect place to do it! It would probably just have to be early enough before it gets dark, so I don't know if that poses a problem. If not Lake Ella, then maybe a coffee shop. If you end up doing it at someone's house, mine is always open and welcome to all Smile

coffee shop is an awesome idea.... one with a couch... or even a bookstore, where we'll be inspiried even more!!!! i love the lake ella idea... but Jackie has a point cuz lake ella can get scary at night. we could meet at never too latte or starbucks or books a million or something... wonderful suggestions!!! yay i'm really excited!!! we can start a list of what books we should read. but i think it should be a definate that our first book should be Release of teh Spirit. yay!

p.s., happy birthday Irene!!!

wassup fl ppls Smile wanted to say helloooooo Smile hope all is going well... and u guys r luckkky ur doin this whole bookclub thingy... when i was young i thought it was for nerds but im feeeeeenin to be in one now lololol i have a lil suggestion ... i think u should try ur hardest to encorporate with the spiritual readings educational readings. someone pointed out to me our lack of chrisitian education these days... we need to understand our faith and theology, dogma and such fully and then understand otehr religions as to refute them... Smile just a thought... pfm Smile

I agree with Peter (hiii!Smile).
Thanks for posting...we wish you could join us down here Smile Maybe we should forget doing it at a coffee shop or online, and just make it a conference call Very Happy. Bet that would be a little chaotic Cheesy Grin
Anyway, I think Peter's suggestion is good. I think we're going to incorporate these topics (theological) into the youth meetings, so maybe whatever we don't cover there...we can try to get in at these spiritual/"book club" gatherings Smile

Pray for me.

Agape,

Amen Shaq... (By the way, I just found out a few weeks ago that your name was Peter... Someone was like, "yeah Peter was at the camp this year, etc." My response, "Who?")

Anyway, thanks for the comments everyone. Shaq, I agree that there's a lack of Christian education, and is exactly why we have a dedicated topic category in our Youth Meetings for the Orthodox Faith (i.e., Theology, Dogma, etc).

God willing, I will soon post all of the presentations and outlines/handouts for download from those topics from the past year or so.

Pray for me,
mark

cool thanks Mark. yea i missed Bishoy's topic last week and really wanted to hear it.

as for the theology part, i really agree that we should get to together and talk about these kind of things because i surf through the forums and see people talking about things that i have no clue what they are about (3 chapters thread and etc.)

id really like to know about our church than just going to church on sunday, tasbeha, etc.

please remember me in your prayers

i am gonna be gone friday afternoon back to tampa. let us know what the plans are if you all are gonna keep the meeting as scheduled or if you all are gonna postpone it.

my opinion: i think you all should start without us. it wouldnt be right to hold back for just a few people. just my thoughts Smile

Just relaying the message:

Every Tuesday starting 5 April there will be Book Club meetings (YAY!!) at 7pm @ Borders on Apalachee... We'll be starting with the book of James, and since this is a discussion, we should all read the first chapter before we go... May God use this to the glory of His name =) =) =)

We had our first book club meeting!! It was last Tuesday, 7:00 at Borders. We talked about the book of James Cahpter 1 and we meditated on a handful of verses... Thank God the meeting was very beneficial... Hopefully we'll do this again, we can post up schedule updates when we find it out
