Very Happy I like this post....
I guess I am not a professional at this, but for memorizing alhan, I guess the best way (or at least what works for me) is to pick a Cantor or one source, and keep the hymn running in the back ground when you are on your computer, driving or doing anything for that matter. What happens is that you get your subconscious mind to memorize it without you spending effort into it. This will also depend if you have a musical ear that you can pick up tunes quickly.

As for voice, I can't help you out with that, but I can try to make you feel better by pointing you to listen to one of the GREATEST Cantors in our church, Cantor Mikhael El-Batanouny; you Listen to him and judge for yourself, I can bet you will feel much more confident in your voice. And Just so I wouldn't get people throwing things at me, Cantor Mikhael is a great source and we thank the Lord to have such a person who preserved the coptic tunes.
well, this is what I can offer, I hope it helps.

I hope I won't discourage you with my "advice"...
Our hymns are composed of notes (do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-si-do to keep it simple). Improving your voice to get these notes comes only with practice. I guess this would practicing a few sequences of notes and repeating them a few times. Even when listening to hymns, try to divide the hymn into notes and repeat them in slow-motion.

Hope this helps a little,
Pavly

Also, record your own voice and listen to it on your own. You'll hear what you sound like, and what you need to work on.

Also, try writing with your left hand for about a week.....it'll get your right cerebral hemisphere active enough for you to completely master essentially any activity which is right-brained......

I agree with molokheya...lol. There's a sentence I thought I'd never say. Anyways, from my own personal experience, I have observed in 3 different occasions that if you learn from someone a lot, your voice might end up sounding like theirs. An example of this is, sorry for using you guys, but George Mikhail from St. Verena and Arsani Sidarous from St. Abraam. They are very close friends and I believe, from what George told me, that Arsani taught him many hymns, so they actually sound VERY similar to each other. I was at a wedding and George was leading and someone said "I didn't know Arsani was here." I told them it was George.

Another example, which I'm not sorry for using, is Paul Samaan (PaulS, the webmaster) and Mina Said (MinaS). Mina has been a deacon for maybe 5 years and he started and continues to learn from Paul, and they sound IDENTICAL AND LOOK IDENTICAL...lol.

The last example is with me. I learned my hymns from M Mikhail and now my voice, unfortunately, sounds like his...lol.

they say that M. Mikhael had an unbelievable voice when he was younger, keep in mind how old the man was when recording those hymns...

Since when was praising God about voice? I think that voice-improvement is just to get praise from men lol.

Thankfully, I was "blessed" with a soft voice Mr. Green. Just keep signign the hymns, and your voice will adapt to it Smile

God bless,
Matt

also u guys sing Hymns and Coptic stuff, it is most likely u have the voice for Coptic hymns.
i had a great dicussion with our church choir and these things came up. We had a Professional singer from Egypt talk to us, and he also mentioned, standing up is bestest and having a hot drink b 4 u start is great.
From mmatt95:Yansoon seems to be good for the voice Smile Wink just like matt mentioned.
this stuff helps alot, and at the end ... u will adapt to it! wether u sing with the choir or in tasbeha or church.
just like i have Wink
hope that helped...
From exGreek:Also, try writing with your left hand for about a week.....it'll get your right cerebral hemisphere active enough for you to completely master essentially any activity which is right-brained......

I would just like to say THAT MY VOICE USED HORRIBLE. I used to lead Saturday mornings with the worst voice. There are few things that I would like to point out that I used to do in order to improve your voice:

#1 Sing with someone whom you thing has a great voice, (and just like stated above) your voice will adopt the person with the great voice's voice.

#2 Go to a steam room (like in a gym) and put eucalyptus oil in the steam jet (I do this every Friday night before the liturgy).....It really works!

#3 Singing a complete tasbeha on Saturday night really helps warm up your voice for Sunday morning.

#4 Taking a nice, hot, steamy shower before going to church really helps.

#5 Talking to people in the morning really helps warming up your voice.

All of the things that I just listed are things that I am telling you about from experience. But a great voice is not everything, as some might say. But normally the people who tell you that have great voices and have no idea what it is like to get really red and sweaty during a hymn because you know that it is sounding horrible (yeah, it happened to me ONCE, THANK GOD). A strong and beautiful voice really helps in prayer because your sub conscience wont bother you throughout the liturgy.

As far as memorizing hymns goes, you have to know that EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. Some memorize from repetition, some from a teacher, and then there is that special group of about 5% of all deacons who memorize hymns from the first time of hearing it. EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT, you just have to find the way that you feel is most comfortable to you.

I hope I have answered some of your questions. Very Happy

What he really does is go to the gym and hoping the very few and unsuccessful workouts he does will increase his muscular size. Eucalyptus is really a legal "Dope-amine" lol. He uses it to forget about his mistakes.

George, yes, can you please clarify it? lol

God bless,
Matt

LOL Mathitis......but I'm sorry American gyms are different Canadian ones.....jk Very Happy

What I meant is that the Eucalyptus oil is really good for clearing up any problems in your voice (cracks, too deep, too high, Cantoritis lol). Also, if you have sinuses, the Eucalyptus oil will clear them. I really don't know much else about it, but the best way for anyone to find out about it is to go to a steam room and try it out and see the results the next morning. Very Happy

Here in Canada, Saunas come in abundance. Don't forget, we do have a "cold" climate... we're one huge artic desert up here lol. We burn seal fat, seal fur, and polar bears. That really helps in clearing the cold from the igloo, and also helps in clearing the badness from the throat. It also helps in fighting baldness lol.

I never knew that about Eucalyptus oil... sounds cool. I'll try it one day, eventually. I do agreewith the Psalmody part though, that works like a charm!
God bless,
Matt
