Ramez,

I think he's going slow there just so people can learn. It IS an instructional web site, you know.

Ramez, I'm glad we're on the same page! I've actually heard so many different ways for the Bright Saturday chants/responses though that it doesn't even strike my curiosity anymore. We used to say some Arabic responses years ago in my church which had some ridiculous melodies! That's why once we had the HICS recordings, we went with it 100% - almost to bring integrity back to the responses of the service (and we are hard core HICS advocates). I haven't heard the Ibrahim Ayed recordings yet - anyone know if there's anything useful that's not on the HICS set (like the rest of Panouti Panouti)? I have a M. Tewfik bright saturday tape on the way in the mail - but that's more for pleasure than for learning.

We'll have the full Mu'allim Tewfik hymnody (every hymn for every occasion he recorded) as well as that of Mu'allim Farag online very soon.

I just don't want to make them available in bits and pieces, because it will be a miraculous achievement to have them both here. Also, I am working with new software to digitally remaster them and make them sound wonderful.

Thankfully, Bright Saturday is months away...

M.Ibrahim's tapes for apocalypse are no that bad. I am not exactly his greatest advocate but I would say his apocalypse tapes are the best he ever made..in my opinion obviously. Its mostly to do with pace and timing in that he actually says the hymns at a decent speed you would say in church not like the rest of his slooooooow tapes. He does do all os Panouti Panouti but I just want to point out that the stops are his own just like anybody who says it. Panouti Panouti is not a tuaght hymn rather the words are put on 1 of 2 tunes either Pi Ehmot Gar (long) or E-Agapi. It was nice and interesting to hear those tapes I must say.

I think a very good example of the hymns becoming different out of Cairo, is in Alexandria's case.. and im sure many other cities in Egypt, when you go around to different areas, the hymns have changed so much because there was no strong way of communication between areas, so soon the hymns differentiated a little at a time.. and im sure Arsani.. can give you a better background then i can.. but perhaps Mu'allim Tewfik's original home was in one of these areas, where the hymns had changed..

Don't you guys think that honestly if we want to look for old hymns or the correct way to say hymns we should look in Alexandria because originially that's where our church started and only recently (within 50 years) moved to Cairo?

no, this is not what happened, Cairo did not change the hymns.. when the Patriarch was in Alexandria, our church was in a hymnal slumber... then Pope (i forget) sent Mu'allim Michael and a few other Mu'alllims all over Egypt collecting all the hymns.. and by the time this was done, the Patriarch had moved to Old Cairo.. and then the long process of recording and setting a standard came into place, but Alexandria really had no communication methods with the Patriarch after the move, so with the hymns they knew, after a while changes occured..
