Anybody have an idea of what they are and their history? Using search terms on the internet isn't very helpful.

So far, from what I've gathered, it sounds like they were "monothelites" (or perhaps "miathelites"?); i.e. after the Third Council of Constantinople, a group of Christians - mostly in Lebanon presumably - tried to use a rejection of this council as a sort of "middle ground" or "bridge" between the non-Chalcedonians and the Byzantine Church. Apparently they were unsuccessful in both directions as is seen from their immense persecution throughout history. And that the archaic state of Lebanon was more or less founded upon this sect. But I don't know why there are Byzantines and Copts (e.g. tonyhabibi, etc.) in Lebanon if the very idea of Lebanon was tied up with Maronism (minus the obligatory and predictable converted Muslims after the Arab conquest)

...any clues?

As far as I know, the Maronites are Antiochian Syriac Christians. Their patron saints is Saint Maron, who is also the patron saint of Lebanon. St. maron lived at the time of St. John Chrysostom. They say that St. John Chrysostom wrote to Saint maron. Traditionally, the Maronites resided in the mountains of Lebanon. The maronites are Catholic. I don't know when they split from the Antiochian patriarchate and started following Rome. But, they claim that St. Maron had always corresponded with the patriarch of Rome throne by sending messengers back and forth. They didn't organize their own church until St. Youhana Maron formed their church as an organization. One thing of note is the Noursat Channel which is started by the Maronites, and is devoted to Christian programming on the dish network. I subscribe and I feel blessed because of it. In other aspects of the maronites is a strong devotion to the mother of God.
