No I do not, this is all I found. But it IS amazing. Also, thanks for the tune, I see that M. Mikhail chants it. I have never heard of this, nor even seen the words. Anyone have any background on this hymn?

You could possibly get in contact with Wagdi Bishara, He records this hymn in his Intsructional Liturgy that has yet to be re-posted on tasbeha. Or possibly Albeir knows something about this hymn

actually yes. Wagdi Bishara does record it in a very clear way.

the hymn is in the old version of the "nahdet el-kana-es" khedmit shamas. It's valid and it is recorded by muallem mikhael. but hard for most of us as copts to say cuz as you can hear, it doesn't sound like coptic. also it would confuse the ppl if said.

I really like the muallem! He is such a typical looking muallem with a strong voice hehe. The stars though are the priests! I cant believe they are all chanting together...

Does anyone know where that liturgy took place? My dad suggested that it must be a group of newly ordained priests spending their 40 days in the monastery. He pointed out that most of the priests were around the same age and sang as if they learned together. Just wondering.

It says Baramous on the top of the link, so I think its from there.

Also, the guy outside is probably a graduate of the clerical college. Anyone know who he is? He is very learned and says everything absolutely correctly, with the right order and tunes.

The 'guy outside' as you refer to him is Muallem Zaher Andrawes a graduate from Didymus and very well learned and talented. I don't think this liturgy is for new priests. Bishop Raphael does a Priest convention annually where priests of central Cairo (the area he looks after) goto to learn rituals and parts of the liturgy in coptic. I have various recordings of these conventions in the past. M. Gad, M.Ibrahim, m.Zaher and others alll goto teach them and then they pray a liturgy and the priests chant together the new parts they have learnt.

Also, does anyone know what this hymn is? He says la7n gideed (I believe). I have never heard it nor know what it is for. He says for the Patiarch or Bishop, but I don't know for what occasion of the bishop. He says M. Tawfik records it and that there are 2 tunes for it. Any info on this hymn?

The recordings I got are on CD from Youth Bishopric bookshop in the Cathedral (Cairo) they are not hidden or anything but easily available. On the cds you will find recordings but the various teachers and some video clips.

The new hymn is not really new just not used anymore as you would never stop chanting it. Why? because Kalos aki sharon emfoou is a hymn to be chanted for the Patriarch on his safe return from travel

The reason M.Zaher has recorded it is because its one of the hymns to be learnt from the Hymns Mahragan 2008 - Bishopric of Youth.

Dear all,
Just a point of criticism; I don't know why Cantor Towfik (as cantor Zaher says), or Cantor Mikhail (as I heard before from a friend) would get rid of the authentic Coptic hymn in the second verse, and replace it with the tune of the anthem of Egypt; any ideas? It actually doesn't sit right with me.

As I understand the first verse of the hymn "kalos aki" has lost the tune, and no cantor recorded it; as for the second verse the original tune (khen oushot I believe) was replaced by the tune of the Egyptian anthem at that time by Cantor Mikhail, or Cantor Towfik; my point is why did he do that (whoever it was)? Was the tune of the national anthem more enthusiasm provoking than the Coptic tune, or was the Coptic tune not suitable, as the pope coming back to the Coptic land? I would love to hear your opinions.

I have heard that it was not only chanted for the pope, but also the president at the time (by muallem mikhail) so that could be a reason why it is in the national anthem.

it wasn't bilady bilady. here we are talking about 60s-70s. maybe earlier to. back than the song was very musical rather than a marching song.

The old national anthem he is talking about is 'Wallah zaman ya selahi'. I found various recordings of this on youtube and you can definitely see the similarities between this and the hymn Kalos aki.

However this is now a totally different topic than the thread name.
