Thanks Tony,

The first message that I was writing was a bit to vulgar...so I PG-13ed it.

On a side note, I'm really happy that you have joined the forums because your posts have been really awesome. I feel that I can agree with all of what you have said, thus far. I like the accuracy!

I am American, engaged to a Copt, and incidentally we are both vegan. When we dropped animal products we initially lost some weight and then leveled off which seems to be the case for most vegans.
Anyway, my point is that the idea of a Coptic family starving their guest is beyond absurd and I find it really hurtful because Copts are my adopted family and the most generous people I have ever known.
The boy in question displayed at best a complete lack of common sense; however I think that for some reason he is lying. Too many things about the story do not add up.
It makes me really sad that Americans have such a pathetic idea of Egyptians and Egypt, and I plan to do all I can to promote the truth.

Emidesu, you are 100% right. I am going to write a book about my experience with our wonderful church and the saints, and what made me choose to get baptized in the Coptic Church. I was actually introduced to the church by my good friend Nargis who I met in a homeless shelter. I ended up in a shelter cause my mom threw me out of the house when I was 17, because, she wanted her money and boyfriend all to herself and was scared that I would mess up her relationship with her boyfriend. Her boyfreind eventually left her. My mom actually starve me for 3 weeks when I was a teenager because she wanted me to do evil things with boys for money. She locked me in a room and denied me food for 3 weeks and I nearly died from this. In fact, I nearly died several time and it was a miracle that I survived. I had a stroke at the age of 25 because my mom forced me to get the depo shot and told me that she would never speak to me again unless I did. I did it because I did not want to lose my mother. This woman physically and emotional tortured me. However, since my first time walking into a Coptic Church, I realized how important it is love others, even if they mistreated you. It is also important to honor your parents. Eventhpugh my mother abused me as a child and growing up, I still love and care for her. This is the way most of us Copts are. This is because the bible teaches us to be this way.

Everytime I walk into a Coptic church, no matter what city it is in, I feel as if I am home. I feel as if the friends I have made from the church are my family.

When my mother starved me when I was 16, she lock me in a very hot basement for 3 to 4 weeks and refused to give me food, water or my insulin. I almost died because of what my mom did to me. Thank God the lord saved me. When I got to the hospital, I did not want to tell anyone about the abuse because I did not want my mom to go to prison. I was starved down to 69 pounds by my mom. I suffered alot because of what my mom did to me and it almost messed up my life. Knowing God and the church is what saved me. Jonathan however, was free to go out and eat what he wanted. The Hannas did not lock him in a room the way my mom did to me. In Egypt the US dollar is very strong. He could get a very decent sized meal for $1US.

Thanks George!

I hope I live up to that "accuracy" standard. I take comfort in knowing you'll call me out if I don't Wink. On a side note, do me a favor and call me Antonios or Sawiris, because whenever you say Tony, I think you're talking to Moza, haha. (Although it does say Tony on my facebook account, which I'm guessing is where you got my name).

Noosa, it sounds like we have both found a surrogate family in the Coptic Orthodox Church, humdulillah. My birth family was also fairly dysfunctional, although not in the physical way that you experienced. As you note, it is still important to respect our birth parents, and I just look at my mother as a kind of child that I have to care for rather than her caring for me.

It occured to me that maybe this boy has an eating disorder and does not want his parents to know. Therefore he is blaming the family in Egypt and saying that they starved him. If this is the case, it will be found out by a doctor. The doctor will tell the parents and get this boy the help he needs.

Sometimes, people with an eating disorder can hide it. I also used to struggle with an eating disorder and I tried to keep it a secret till one day I got sick.

hmmm,

Im not so sure its an eating disorder. Reason being is because he weighed normal height before he left to egypt. Most likely he did not like the food and rejected whatever that was offerred to him.

Well if he did not like the food offered to him, he should have gone into a Mcdonalds and baught food. He can get a good size meal there for $1 US. The American dollar is very strong in Egypt. But he did not want to cause he probably has an eating disorder.

I tend to agree with Noosa. Often eating disorders kick in when an adolescent faces increased independence.

This was such a fade...i just love how our world loves to put so much propaganda on dumb things like this just to make a short term "big deal" about them and then just let go of the matter completely.

Just my thoughts....

Surprisingly, that doesn't say anything like, "the coptic church is not responsible for the damage done to this kid because what happened is not anything that the church is responsible for." I think that he sort of tried to say that, but indirectly. None the less, he should have been more direct.

This kid may have done it to himself and is blaming these poor innocent people beause one of 2 reasons.
1. He has an eating disorder and does not want to be in the
hospital.
2. He is looking to make a quick buck to pay for his college
education.
This is just immoral what he is doing and God is the one who knows the truth. I fast on a very regular basis and I never was starved during siam. Furthermore, eventhough I am fasting, I go out of my way to accommodate family or friends who are not fasting. In all honesty, I think that fasting is a very personal thing between God and the person who is fasting. I am sure that most of you think the same way and I am sure that the host family thought the same way and went out of their way to accommodate this boy.
