Dear hany58,
I would like to oppose what you said (not disagreeing completely I mean) about the different ways we sing hymns. I do agree that if we all stood at the same time in different places singing one particular hymns, we will have different rhythms, and we will finish that hymn each one on their own time. This is not the issue however. The big issue is precision and honesty in rendition. To me, it doesn't seem right when Ibrahim Ayad sings some of these hymns different to other cantors (not talking about the rhythm, or the speed). I mean if we take hymnology as a study, there are certain musical segments composed of melismata (to help our larynx adapt to the music) that are repeated in different hymns. Although inconsistent sometimes, but I find HICS the most precise. Ibrahim doesn't usually follow this. In fact, he sometimes distorts these segments for the sake of the hymn (whether it sounds a bit joyful, or a bit low in tune), and this conflicts with the precision in rendition. What do you all think about this?
God bless you all and pray for us a lot

Thanks for your reply opha

With all respect to what you are saying I disagree with what you are saying, but I mean again it depends, it varies from one person to another. I have one of my friends that cannot completely learn from Cantor Farag, taking into consideration that the church takes Cantor Farag as the second Muallem Mikail, but personally I cannot learn from him. Does this mean that Muallem Farag is not that good? No, ofcourse not, Cantor Farag is very respected for his awesome knowledge. But again I don't disagree completely with what you saying because lots of people say the same thing, but personally I really really love Muallem Ibrahim and I consider him my personal teacher of coptic hymns and I never ever see the beauty of hymns except thru him,

God bless, I would like to hear your reply,

Hany

Dear Hany,
Maybe and just maybe, lost of people including me find it difficult to learn from cantor Farag because he sings hymns so quickly in his tapes not being very mindful of teaching each and every piece of melismata. I think that when it comes to lessons, he would be very meticulous and precise in handing the hymn down to the likes of the HICS and cantor Ibrahim. The latter does record his tapes being mindful of teaching those who listen to them. These are just my thoughts.
God bless you and pray for us a lot

well i will have to put my 2 cents....as someone who recorded hymns with mm ibrahim ayad in egypt and germany and lived with him in the cathedral for 7 years....i saw him interact with his fellow moualimeen, and trust me when i say that the "beautification" of hymns that some of you guys have labelled upon mm ibrahim has really done wonders for coptic hymnology in our time...because his voice is pure, many have been able to pick up the individual hazzat that are required to learn the lahn...and as far as personal touch is concerned....welcome to the world of coptic alhan!!
by the way,the priest in the germany tapes are abouna bigol bassily (brother to hg bishop demetrious and brother to tasony angel the wife of fr bishoy kamel of blessed memory)and fr mikhail el baramosy the abbot in charge of st anthony monastery in frankfurt,germany....kastor

Dear kastor999,
I am so sorry to speak that way of Cantor Ibrahim Ayad. Trust me I didn't mean to degrade him by any means, or undermine his efforts that we all know that they are so massive in edifying the church, at least through hymns, and I am sure so many other things too he did, and he always does. I hope I haven't even offended you. It is just that I may be mistaken thinking that of him as being a beginner in hymns that I don't appreciate his style, or his voice, but I just wanted to voice my opinion on this website. I am sorry again.
God bless you all and pray for me a lot

Dear Kastor999,
Thanks very much for giving me your opinion. Just forgive me being a beginner in Coptic hymns who gets confused sometimes when comparing hymns sung "differently" by many cantors. I, for one, understand very well that without someone like Ibrahim Ayad in the hymnology field, we would have maybe lost more and more of the hymns that we have today. So thank God for him being here; but no harm in posing arguments for discussion, and especially that no one is flawless.
However, I am grateful for your response. God bless you and pray for us a lot

I would like to thank everyone that is invlolved in this discussion, Its great that we argue and discuss with eachother about how hymns are sung, I mean that makes us understand more and more about hymnology which is a great part of our church. I really really apologize if I offended anyone with my replies. But I just like Cantor Ibrahim Ayaad so so much and that's why sometimes I just defend as much as I can Laughing hahaha,

Hany
