What should I do?

I have a friend that I know from church and the youth meeting. I know that she has a college degree. I saw her panhandling on the subways in New York City. Her dad died when she was a baby and her mom does not have a job either. This woman was laid off from her job. She and her mom are facing eviction from their apartment because they cannot afford to pay the rent. I am worried and I want to help her. She does not like to ask for help from people she knows because she feels very ashamed to. She had an uncle who has money but would never help her and her mom. That is why she begs for money from strangers than asks people she knows for help. She feels that she does not know them and has no emotional connection from the strangers she asks for help from. I am concerned about her and want to help her. What advice should I give her?

Advise her to get over her pride, for thats what it comes to. She can ask abouna for help (if she goes to one of the jersey city churches, I know for a fact they help many people financially) even if she does not want to ask for money (which is understandable), the priests often are aware of available jobs. Often members of the congregation who have a business or are in a hiring position will ask the priests if they know someone who is looking for work. If the case is desperate (as this seems) they can (and have) "called in a favor" or employ them through the church something for the short term to get the person breathing room to get their situation straight.

Then there are gov't assistance programs available, I just don't know how one would go about obtaining them.

Thank you so much I will tell her that. It is even hard anybody to get her to even admit that she is facing hardship. She has faced hardship in the past and her family memebers, who were financially doing well, refuse to help her when she ask them for help. Thay even made her feel very bad just for asking for help. They have called her a bum and made her feel worthless by degrading her. That is why she is afraid to even admit she needs to be bailed out. I am thinking of telling abouna about it to help this girl.
