Adam Psalias, Theotokias, and Loubshes

32 hymns

A short tune, used only on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays, for some of the praise hymns, e.g., Psalias, Theotokias, and Loubshs. It refers to the beginning or Adam so called because it coincides with the first Theotokia on Monday which begins, "Adam while in his sorrow..." The Adam tunes are reviving and uplifting, reflecting what Sunday expresses in our church, i.e., the victory of Resurrection, and Monday, which signifies renewal.

Batos Psalias, Theotokias, and Loubshes

35 hymns

The Batos tune, chanted only on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, is longer than the Adam tune. It is derived from the Coptic word “Vatos,” which means "the bush." This name is applied to the tune, because it coincides with the Theotokia of Thursday, which begins, "The bush seen by Moses..." The Batos tunes are more solemn than the Adam tunes, and hence reflect the days it expresses, i.e., Wednesday, the day in which Judas plotted against Christ; Thursday, when the Lord was delivered into the Jews' hands; Friday, the day of the Crucifixion; and Saturday, the day Christ’s body lay in the tomb.
