The Rite of Communion Hymns during Kiahk.
by Ramez Mikhail
This article explains in detail the proper order of hymns that should be chanted during Communion during the Blessed month of Kiahk.
The Order of the Communion during Kiahk
1-Long Introduction to psalm 150 in Kiahk tune:
Three long Alleluias in the beginning of psalm 150 in kiahk tune, considered to be one of the longest tunes for psalm 150.
2-The rest of the verses of psalm 150:
Starting from `cmou eV] qen nie;ouab until Doxa patri the verses are to be chanted in kiahk tune without any refrains*
3-Al Ke nun @
To be chanted starting from this verse and to the end of the psalm. This hymn is very similar to the introductory alleluia for psalm 150 in the annual tune.
4-Je `f`cmarwout in Kiahk tune:
This hymn has a long tune in only two occasions, Kiahk and Great Lent.
5-`F`em`psa gar @
This hymn borrows the exact tunes of the introduction of doxologies of Kiahk. According to common practice, the first four verses are chanted in the tune of the introduction to the doxologies then the rest of the verses are chanted using the fast tune of the doxologies.
* In some areas, a refrain for psalm 150 in Kiahk tune exists and is frequently practiced. For the record, this new adjustment to the more traditional way is as follows:
Pimici ebol qen `Viwt qajwou `nniewn tyrou.
Begotten of the Father before all ages and took flesh from the Virgin.
This refrain most likely comes from Alexandrian teaching. However, no major cantor has recorded this refrain especially since the more traditional way of chanting the communion psalm is the long Coptic tune rather than the faster doxology tune. Thus, it is not recommended to use this refrain.
